Wilderness Report #136
March 11, 2005

A bi-weekly update on the happenings in the Wilderness movement brought to you by the Wilderness Society's Wilderness Support Center.

In This Issue

  • Wilderness Advocates Announce Proposals for Utah National Forests

  • Citizen wilderness advocates unveiled their proposal for new southern Utah national forest wilderness designation at an event in Salt Lake City on February 23, 2005. The wilderness proposal, which covers areas in the Dixie, Fishlake and Manti-La Sal National Forest, is the result of three years of field research and mapping and is based on decades of citizen exploration of these forest lands.

  • Book reviews: The Battle for Alabama’s Wilderness: Saving the Great Gymnasiums of Nature & Coyotes and Town Dogs: Earth First! and the Environmental Movement

  • Two new book reviews.

  • Battle for the Arctic Refuge is Just Beginning

  • An amendment to keep oil drilling out of the Arctic Refuge was narrowly defeated in the US Senate by a vote of 51 to 49. The battle is far from over. The American people are overwhelmingly opposed to drilling in the Arctic Refuge. We are confident that that the US Congress will ultimately listen to them and protect this national treasure
